1. Some less experienced "interviewees" are confused about the terminology of reportage. Here's a few definitions: "off the record" means this conversation never took place and certainly cannot appear in or on the news; "not to be attributed" means the story can be reported but no source can be named. Be careful on this, however, because a reporter may describe the source so accurately that every finger will be pointing at you anyway; "backgrounding" means the information can be reported and attribution may or may not be used, but see note of warning above. Make sure both you and the reporter understand all the rules, in advance. It doesn't count if you've already done the interview.

2. If you're heading a press conference on a critical issue, and have a few supporters with you to answer auxiliary questions, make sure you and your supporters don't leave confidential briefing notes, in the excitement of the moment, in places where the media can pick them up or read them. We've seen it happen; it's not pretty.

3. If you're photocopying an internal document, such as a government submission, for someone outside of the company, make sure you or your assistant thumb through the pages thoroughly. You'd be surprised how often the existence of handwritten margin notes is forgotten, until you realize the courier package is about to land on the recipient's desk.
