Insider Tips - 25

Here's a simple but critical tip for small business owners who are contemplating putting together a Web site:

When presenting your work on the Web, you should keep a few fonts in mind. Arial and Helvetica are the two sans-serif fonts of the PC and Apple platforms. These fonts are the fonts of choice for clear, crisp text on the computer monitor.

Remember that your monitor displays pixels. It is, in essence, a really large chess board that chops up things into little squares. What looks best in those squares? Sans-serif fonts! What's a serif font then? Serif fonts have tails ... they work well for print because the words flow along a line almost like a stream of water. This doesn't work well in the world of chess boards and computers.

If the question is driving you wild ... choose a resident sans-serif font and give your viewers a break. Good eyes are hard to find!
