Insider Tips - 23

The Globe and Mail's March 2000 issue of the Report On Business Magazine had an article titled, "Brother, Can You Paradigm" by Charles Macli, and sub-titled, "Our next available management fad will be with you shortly."

Macli strikes home when he touches on two of the key concerns articulated by at least one prominent critic of "flavour-of-the-month" management ideas: That some executives crusade for concepts in which they really have no interest, such as "the customer always comes first" and "our staff are our company's most valuable resource".

Another concern is that "consultant co-dependent" managers, especially those who employ one or more consultants on long-term growth development campaigns, actually deliver a negative message to the troops: As managers, they don't know what to do now, didn't know what to do about the previous corporate culture, and are hardly likely to deal effectively with whatever change the consultant manages to direct. In other words, they are leaders without leadership skills and are ready to buy or borrow some at the going hourly rate.

For freelance communications professionals, especially those whose work, to some degree, touches on human resources, the article is a good one to pin on the wall as a timely reminder. Any training and development contracts that seem to go on indefinitely, often spell trouble.

Could be the best change of all, for you, is to simply fire your client. Re-engineering can be a two-way street, you know.
