Insider Tips - 2

Just about anyone can generate news stories but the real trick is to keep control once the media's turned their sharp eyes on you. Get prepared.

1. Figure out in advance who else the media is likely to call to get what they hope will be a conflicting view point. Assess what that conflict will be, and diffuse it in your interview first.

2. Prepare key messages in advance of an interview, or to have on hand in case you're called for comment on a quickly unfolding news story. Don't over-prepare though; too much information can be overwhelming to the reporter, who may be on deadline. Your whole treatise, no matter how enlightening you find it, may be dropped entirely.

3. When questioned on a development, either within your own company or outside it, the natural human urge is to explain too much. The questions may encourage this. Everyone wants to help, to assist both the interviewer and the people affected by the story. But by doing so, without careful thought, you may find yourself creating a whole other story and waking up to regret it.
