What makes a really good P.R. and communications practitioner? Clients should check out, when shopping around, whether their potential P.R. consultants…

1. understand the company's goals and corporate culture

2. have a wide variety of writing styles, all of which are skillful, clear, concise

3. know how to help manage corporate reputations and how to work with companies to help maintain their leadership position

4. know how to work effectively with all the media, from print to online, and have good, steady contacts in all of them

5. always work with the company to create fresh story angles to attract media attention

6. research properly on an issue or development that's important to the company so that when the phone rings or the E-mail arrives from the media, the communications person actually has answers at the other end

7. have a good solid understanding of business practices so that their recommendations make sense to the bottom line and better yet, drive the bottom line in the right direction

8. explain their billing, payment and mark-up practices clearly and ask (and receive) a budget itemizing what amounts are set aside respectively for fees, for expenses, etc

9. expect to be included in key strategic planning sessions and make time for them

10. always keep their antenna up and waving about so they can come back to you with both opportunities and with problems that may lie just over the horizon
